Riot Games, the developers of the hit MOBA League of Legends,
recently revealed that they plan on making changes to the in-game store of the game.Lead Gameplay Designer, Mark “Scruffy” Yetter, otherwise known as RiotScruffy, was the first to break the news in a post titled “Item Shop Cleanup” over at the game’s Dev Corner. In the post, he revealed that there’s so much clutter in the item shop right now that the dev team is having difficulty developing new products. They believe that, as things currently are, the item shop makes it “hard to quickly find the item you’re looking for”. At the same time, they also believe that the current item shop layout makes it overwhelming for new players, as well as players who are trying out new roles or other champions. Because of this, the team now plans to get rid of all the “dead” items in the shop to make it “faster to navigate and easier to understand” and, at the same time, make space for new items. The dev team plans on removing items that:- Massively reduce or remove counterplay against a champion- Incentivize not interacting with the enemy team- Give access to an effect (usually reactive or defensive) that we don’t actually want all champions to have access to - Items too similar to another item- Very low usage rate items- Items reducing or not adding impactful decisions to the systemThe team hopes to offer new items once they’re done cleaning up the item shop. In particular, they want to introduce items that can help add more diversity for champions, or items that can help in pushing towers. All in all, the purpose of the item cleanup isn’t simply to remove items, or to add new ones down the line. Instead, they also want to rework others or combine their effects, all the while removing certain items that they feel like no longer have an impact on the game.
